Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School

Thank you for helping us have a successful 2009-10 school year. In addition to that we would like to say thank you for supporting our various activities, fundraisers, and for encouraging your student to be the best they can. We would like to say thanks for choosing Harvey School District 152’s Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School.

Together we have made great gains but there is more we can do to prepare our students for future success and independence.

To keep students engaged academically throughout the summer expose them to as many experiences as possible: take a train ride downtown, visit the museums or local festivals or bike ride through the forest preserves. Most of these activities are low cost or free of charge; visit http://chicago.metromix.com to find a list of Chicagoland/ suburban activities.

Another helpful tip is to encourage students to use their library card. At the library, they can read or use the internet to visit these familiar and educational websites:

  1. www.funbrain.com - math and grammar games
  2. www.coolmath.com - math activities: basic -algebra with tutorials
  3. www.m-w.com - word games
  4. www.poetry4kids.com - creative ideas for young writers
  5. www.kidchess.com - online chess games and tutorials
  6. www.math-drills.com - math drills
  7. www.freerice.com - vocabulary, geography and math drills
  8. www.starfall.com - reading reinforcement
  9. www.harvey152.org - Harvey School District 152 news
  10. www.nationalgeographic.com - science news and games

Keeping students engaged over the summer helps build their confidence and increases their overall love and respect for their education.

Thank you
