In honor of Black History Month, our District 152 staff showed off their door decorations. Check out Brooks Middle School Social Worker-Ms. Buchanan's “HBCU Door to Success," featuring school pride hoodies from historically black colleges and universities. Also, look at Mrs. Conley, showing off her Black History “Wall of Fame” and her “Hidden Figures” door honoring Katherine Johnson, who’s mathematical calculations helped NASA astronauts get to the moon and back. Congratulations to our District Wide Spelling Bee Champions! After 27 rounds of spelling, the winners were announced:
1st Place: Donnell Lockett (Brooks Middle School)
2nd Place: Antonio Delgade (Bryant Elementary School)
3rd Place: Mason Brooks (Bryant Elementary School)
Proud Principal Mr. Darrell Anderson congratulated the winners, all of which were either current or former students of Bryant Elementary School. Also in attendance were Board President Casey Nesbit, Board Member Myra Gardner and Co-Interim Superintendent Dr. Barbara Mason.

Last week, 20 Brooks Middle School parents learned first aid and CPR through
Training Concepts by the American Red Cross! Parents learned how to perform adult, child and infant CPR, along with AED (Advance Emergency Defibrillator) machine training.
Thank you to Brooks Middle School parent coordinator Ms. McDowell for being instrumental in organizing this class for other parents. Other schools within the district will be offering sessions on this life-saving skill this semester.

T3 Workshops (Teachers Train Teachers) were in session this week! Harvey School District 152 teachers conducted workshops with their colleagues to showcase their expertise, inspire best practices and share teaching strategies to improve instruction. The educators created a “Make and Take Literacy Center”.

Before winter break, UChicago Ingalls Memorial Hospital donated a $6,000 gift for the holiday season to our students and families. Several Harvey School District 152 families received a $250 gift card.

Last week, Brooks Middle School 6th graders heard from and welcomed Mr. Sam Mihara! Mr. Mihara is a public speaker who shared his experiences as a young child during World War II being forced with his family into the Heart Mountain prison camp in Wyoming.
Mr. Mihara is a second-generation Japanese American (Nisei), born and raised in San Francisco, who went on to become a rocket scientist. Thank you for sharing your inspiring story with our students! Learn more about Mr. Mihara:

In observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday, Harvey School District 152 will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16.

Sending a "JOB WELL DONE" to Mrs. Davida Dallas and her Brooks Middle School ELA students for their great work before Winter Break with the Lincoln Park Community Service Project. Ms. Dallas and her 75 ELA students participated in this project after her classes completed a research paper highlighting "Homelessness in America". Student Council members and other grade level students wanted to help in some way and in 2 weeks they collected over 150 blankets to make their donation. Congrats on a great lesson for the students, Mrs. Dallas!
